Eriophyoidea of Southeast Asia

Of over 3000 species, at least 10% have been recorded from Southeast Asia. In total, there were 325 species of the Eriophyoidea that had been reported in Southeast Asia. These species belong to three families, eight subfamilies, 11 tribes and 104 genera. Taxonomically, the Eriophyoidea of Southeast Asia showed a clumped distribution. The Phytoptidae has only two species, the Eriophyidae has 261 (80%) species, and the Diptilomiopidae has 62 (19%) species. Aceria (62 species), Diptilomiopus (34 species), Eriophyes (18 species), Epitrimerus (12 species) and Tetra (10 species) are the five big genera; they account for 43% of all the species. Among the 104 genera, 34 (33%) are monotypic. Most species in Aceria and Eriophyes were described by Nalepa from Indonesia in a series of papers in the early 1900s (mostly without illustrations). Most species in Diptilomiopus were described by Chandrapatya & Boczek from Thailand in a series of papers published in the late 1980s to early 2000s. Geographically, the distribution of the 325 species of Eriophyoidea in Southeast Asia is highly uneven. However, this is partially a reflection of lack of research in some countries. Thailand, with contributions mostly by Chandrapatya & Boczek, has 206 species, and all of these, except three, are endemic. Indonesia, with contributions mostly by Nalepa, has 103 species and almost all are reported form Java (96 species); the rate of endemicity is 93%. These two countries accounted for 95% of all the species recorded from the region. The Philippines has 17 species, Singapore has 6 species, Malaysia has 3 species, and Myanmar and Vietnam each has 1 species. Cambodia, Laos, East Timor and Brunei have no eriophyoid mites reported so far. These clearly suggest the need for more systematic study of the eriophyoid fauna in these much neglected regions.
