About this website
This website is initially the result of
three projects funded through
The Sanitary and Phytosanitary Capacity Building
Program (SPS CBP), which is an AusAID-funded
regional program managed by the Office of the Chief
Plant Protection Officer within the Australian
Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and
Forestry. The first project was a training "Workshop
on Diagnostics of Phytophagous Mites (Acari)",
which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 5-10 May
2008, focused on the identification, preparation and
collection of phytophagous mites of the families
Tetranychidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tarsonemidae and
Eriophyidae, covering the concept of a diagnostic
standard and included sessions on the morphology,
biology and ecology of mites and the management and
control of mite infestations.
The second project provided: (1) in-country
training on technical skills appropriate for
collection, preparation and curation of mites; (2)
Identifications of important taxa of phytophagous
mites; (3) Discussion or preliminary work on any
future collaborative opportunities; and (4)
Establishment of an ASEAN website for relevant
taxonomic and other resources. The
third project provided a short-term attachment to a
New Zealand laboratory specialising in the
diagnostics of stored product mites (Acari).
Two ASEAN scientists (Hanani ZAINOL
of Malaysia and Ploychompoo
KONVIPASRUANG of Thailand)
travelled to the New Zealand laboratory, for the
purpose of specialist training in the diagnostics of
stored product mites.
In 2014, a new course
"TRAINING IN MITE DIAGNOSTICS" was funded by New Zealand
Aid through a project managed by Landcare
Research. The course was run at Applied Research
Institute of Agricultural Quarantine (ARIAQ), Bekasi,
Indonesia for 14 participants from various quarantine labs in
Indonesia.
This website has a focus on
the network of people and institutions participated in
mite capacity-building in ASEAN countries and has the
main purpose of providing information on mites to
participants in the region. Members participated
in the capacity-building programme should get a
password to download some material from this
site.
